  • 10 lessons from the Wu-Tang Clan to the creative industry

10 lessons from the Wu-Tang Clan to the creative industry

Here are 10 things the legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan taught me about working in a creative agency.

You don’t have to be 100% original to be 100% original

Wu-Tang Clan is known for its unique sound. Their trademark is using snippets of dialogue from old martial arts movies. The title of their debut album is the most obvious reference to their influences.

But they also sampled everyone from American jazz pianist Thelonius Monk to Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, too. Surprising, right? Even originals are inspired by others.

    Create a growth plan

The group always had the business acumen to look ahead. They negotiated an exceptional record deal that allowed members to sign solo contracts with other labels. Many brands claim to be disruptive, but Wu-Tang’s strategy truly earns that description.

The payoff for Wu-Tang fans is clear. That’s why we have classic albums like Ghostface Killah‘s Supreme Clientele and Raekwon‘s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

Agencies should plan beyond that one deadline and build on the team’s strengths. You’ll surely find the momentum to expand.

    The importance of working together

Shame on a colleague who tried to run game on a colleague.

    Stand out with your writing

Take a closer look at Wu-Tang’s lyrics. You’ll discover layers upon layers of references. They cover everything from contemporary pop culture to ancient history. The Wu-Tang Clan didn’t just brag or insult others. Their verses travel through time and space with an effortless flow that still goes unmatched today.

Team members can (and should) have voices of their own

Each member of the group had their distinct tonal, rhythmic, and lyrical signatures, but it’s all 100% Wu-Tang. Let everyone’s unique talent shine through.

Coming into your voice takes time

Choosing tone of voice descriptors for your brand platform is as easy as rhyming trivia with Bolivia, but it takes time for your voice to mature and come to life.

Just listen to Masta Killa whose aggressive bite on Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) mellows out on later albums. Copywriters, keep writing, and you’ll find new nuances to your TOV.

    Look into audio branding

Sure, Wu-Tang Clan’s music has a distinct sound – but the movie clips and minimalist beats are only one part of their audio experience. Even their name is a sound effect.

That is, at least if you believe GZA. To paraphrase what he told the audience during his 2019 gig in Helsinki, “Wu is the sound of the sword cutting through the air. Tang is the sound of the sword’s impact on your opponent’s thick skull.” This obviously refers to the power of Wu-Tang’s lyrics. To them, words are weapons.

Just make your audio signature street-credible and short enough. If we listen to other artists, grunting “G-Unit” is great, but shouting your name as if you’re orgasming is not (looking at you, Jason Derulo).

For more hip-hop education, read Timbaland’s tips for finding your style

Adversity can be a source of inspiration

Endless deadlines and rounds of feedback will get to you, especially if you suffer from imposter syndrome (it’s an agency, everyone does). But eventually, the challenges become a source of strength and wisdom.

The Wu-Tang members’ childhoods in poor and crime-ridden projects could’ve turned them into promoters of violence, but they were able to rise above.

Even the Kung Fu movie references speak more to control and peace than chaos. Just listen to the intro of one of my all-time favorite Wu tracks, Campfire.

A signature skill leads to new opportunities

There will be times when you think you’re stagnating or limited by your role. While being pigeonholed is frustrating, mastering your craft will eventually lead to new opportunities.

From merchandising to motivational speaking to scoring films, the Wu have certainly expanded far beyond music. Even acting – RZA & GZA have made memorable acting appearances on film & TV (Chappelle’s Show was my true introduction to the band’s brilliance).

Jim Jarmusch’s short film Delirium, which stars RZA, GZA & comedy legend Bill Murray, is still one of my all-time favorite movie scenes.

Don’t just promote a product, promote a mindset

Even though individual members are formidable talents on their own, together the supergroup of MCs has gone much further than just a musical act. Their sound, look, and charisma combine into an entire mindset, a guiding philosophy that shines through and continues to influence creatives generation after generation.

When your agency pitches any branding project to a client, remember that a brand isn’t only a visual identity, and a product can be much more than its physical form. Capture a mindset, a discipline, a way of life – and your brand will entice and endure.

(Caveat: no brand will ever outlive Wu-Tang Clan, though. Because Wu-Tang is forever.)

Ready to enter the 36th Chamber

I want to thank RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and Cappadonna for these lessons on creativity.

  • 5 mindblowing creative lessons from the MasterClass platform

5 mindblowing creative lessons from the MasterClass platform

Disclaimer: This article is not sponsored by MasterClass

Every creative needs inspiration to come up with ideas, test different approaches, and keep learning. One of the most captivating sources of inspiration is the MasterClass platform.

MasterClass is an online education platform that hosts tutorials and lectures pre-recorded by experts in various fields. Examples include President Bill Clinton on inclusive leadership and Samuel L. Jackson on acting.

I want to share some insights to help anyone working in an advertising agency or in the creative industry hone their craft and boost career confidence.

These insights come from more than twenty courses in fields such as arts and entertainment, business, wellness, and more. To make them easier to follow, I have divided the insights into five sections.

On the importance of keeping an open mind

On the importance of keeping an open mind

To begin with, filmmaker James Cameron stresses the value of curiosity. In his words, the importance of staying curious cannot be overstated.

“Live life and observe. Before you can radiate, you need to absorb,” Cameron explains. In other words, the best ideas grow from what you have seen or felt first-hand. As a result, observing life helps you appreciate life more deeply.

Similarly, in their MasterClass on advertising, Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein quote industry legend David Ogilvy. They advise creatives to write for only two hours instead of ten. “The rest of the time, you should find things to write about.”

At this point, you may wonder: you can make the time, but how do you find inspiration? Humorist David Sedaris offers one approach: “say yes to weird experiences.”

In addition, music producer Timbaland reminds us that finding inspiration is not a one-off exercise. Instead, you should always stay tuned in. He instructs you to study the greats, whatever that means in your craft. However, he also adds that you must “evolve your influences.”

St. Vincent teaches songwriting on MasterClass.

    On the importance of practice

We all know the saying “practice makes perfect.” In fact, honing your craft patiently is especially important for junior talents. At the same time, even seasoned veterans cannot rest on their laurels.

Once you begin, negotiator Chris Voss suggests that it takes 40–60 repetitions before the skill feels natural.

Of course, that number might sound exhausting and tedious. However, there is an upside to the drills. According to Voss, “feeling awkward is a sign that you’re learning.”

In a similar vein, musician St. Vincent talks about what she calls generative songwriting. Put simply, the principle applies to any craft: “the more you do it, the more you’re able to make.”

On the other hand, going it alone may not take you as far as you want to go. Therefore, it is a good idea to ask someone for guidance. This should be someone with appropriate experience. Yet, as journalist Elaine Welteroth reminds us, “mentors don’t have to be your senior.”

Esther Perel teaches relational intelligence on Masterclass.

On the importance of personal skills

Giving feedback is one of the key responsibilities of a mentor (or any colleague, for that matter). We all have our own ways of giving and receiving feedback, and this can lead to misunderstandings or even conflict.

Psychotherapist Esther Perel suggests asking for feedback on your feedback. Has my advice helped you to do things differently? Was it actionable?

Sometimes things get heated in the workplace. Voss says appropriate labeling can help disarm a conflict. This means naming the other person’s emotions by saying, “You’re upset?” Labeling negatives might cancel them, and labeling positives reinforces them.

But do remember to distinguish what’s relevant to a professional negotiation. As Sedaris says, “truth is different from feelings.”

Timbaland teaches music production on MasterClass.

On the importance of owning your idea

You might think it’s just a job – and that is fine.

But as former White House Communications Director George Stephanopoulos says, “those who work to interpret and communicate do get personally invested in things that aren’t directly personal.” This is something he learned while covering 9/11 for ABC News.

And when you do find something personal, don’t stop believing in your idea or signature style.

“Everyone has their own bounce. Hold on to yours,” Timbaland says. He uses the song Pong as an example. He wrote the R&B classic nine years before Ginuwine got a record deal. “If you get frustrated, it’s good because it shows your love is real.”

    On the importance of self-care

Whatever your craft is, remember that your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time.

Don’t forget to take care of yourself as well. Welteroth suggests creating a self-care strategy, including actual calendar bookings for something that gives you energy – and committing to the routine.

Bonus tip: mix & match what you’ve learned

A screenwriter teaches you screenwriting. A career coach teaches you to design your professional growth path.

But oftentimes, the most interesting ideas materialize when you apply learnings from one discipline to another. A writer can draw inspiration from a designer, just like a musical artist can learn from a cinematographer. The variety of topics and instructors on MasterClass is a testament to that. Remember to keep an open mind.

  • How to gain 1000 followers on TikTok – and keep growing

How to gain 1000 followers on TikTok – and keep growing

Somehow, a lot of marketers still scoff at TikTok and dismiss it as “just a platform for kids to dance and lip-sync.”

While entertainment is still prevalent, there’s so much more to TikTok. Over the past 18 months or so, more mature audiences have taken to the platform and populated it with their interests, making TikTok a tool for personal branding and thought leadership.

I’ll admit I too had my reservations at first.

I envied users much younger than me using TikTok’s native video editing tools so creatively that I didn’t think I would ever get to the same level. I would need to put myself on the line and perform to a bunch of strangers. And too many other 30-year-olds deemed it necessary to justify being active on TikTok despite their age as if we didn’t belong.

Yes, perhaps the actual barrier was nothing more than the looming realization: I’m almost middle-aged. Nevertheless, I knew the possibilities, I’d seen what people did – and still felt I didn’t fully understand it.

So, the 2020 lockdown became an opportunity to adopt this new creative method. I decided to take the plunge and become a TikTok creator. I challenged myself to publish one video/day for 30 days and see what happens.

A few months later, I reached the glorified milestone of one thousand followers on TikTok, and have kept growing ever since.

Here’s how I grew my audience.

How to get followers on TikTok?

    1. Focus on one concept

I started by experimenting with all kinds of stuff, mostly hopping on the few trends I was comfortable with. However, I needed an original concept I would be able to sustain for 30 days. I chose a topic that didn’t require that much production: tell one dad joke a day.

While comedy isn’t for all (I don’t even consider myself a good comedian), the main point is to establish a throughline in all your posts so the audience understands what you’re all about.

This could be a specific topic (especially if you want to become a thought leader), a character or persona, or a specific style you’re known for. For example, Emily King is known for both her signature slide in front of a mirror and her topic: relationship advice.

    2. Publish daily

On the one hand, TikTok’s algorithm is democratic. On the other, it might seem arbitrary. You could have a million followers and reach a hundred of them, or you might have zero followers and reach 1 million people.

Still, TikTok clearly rewards consistency. That’s why I posted once a day, and usually at the same time of day – also on weekends. My first post reached about 200 users each, and in a couple of weeks, I averaged 1000 views per post.

Sometimes a post might fall through the cracks and other times a post goes viral in a matter of hours. Just keep at it, and the platform will get you trending again.

    3. Use hashtags consistently

I’ve been researching if there’s a best practice for using hashtags on TikTok but didn’t find one clear answer.

While some load their video descriptions with ten hashtags, I’ve found that choosing a couple of keywords is more helpful. I’ve been using four that are all related and use the same language so that the algorithm can better determine to whom they should show my content.

Go for hashtags that aren’t too popular – it’ll be easier to stand out with a hashtag with 10 000 posts than one with a billion. Test which combo works and use it consistently to become a top creator in your niche.

And definitely stay away from the hacky and tacky hashtags like #foryou or #xyzbca – they won’t help you.

    4. Use your native language

This tip might help if you live in a non-English-speaking country.

Anyone can start trending on TikTok but usually, the English-speaking creators get more traction. At least my For You feed is filled with Americans although I live in Finland.

That’s why I also posted in English until I noticed how much more engagement my Finnish videos generated. This trend is clearly aligned with the hashtag approach: target the less saturated niche.

    5. React to comments

Engagement of any kind makes your content appear more appealing to the algorithm. That’s why I make sure to like or respond to each comment on videos unless it’s completely unrelated or spam.

    6. The value of repurposing content

Marketers spend a lot of time and money on their content – so why not re-post some of your favorites every now and then?

Repurposing content is especially OK on a platform where the algorithm might bury your post without a proper reason and the audience is scattered across a billion variations of the For You feed.

Keep the momentum going with recycled content, as is or with some tweaks to the copy, hashtags, or other variables.

Why do I need 1000 followers on TikTok?

Reaching certain milestones on social media platforms can unlock new opportunities for creativity and growth.

On YouTube, 1000 subscribers enable new posting options and monetization. On TikTok, 1000 followers enables livestreaming possibilities.

And while the algorithm doesn’t favor top influencers as much as Instagram does, having more followers does make you more attractive to follow.

The real payoff of my experiment

The most valuable lesson I learned is painfully obvious: these tactics apply to ALL major social media platforms.

Whether it’s TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram, you need to

    • Be active & post consistently
    • Define a target audience and speak to your niche
    • Engage with the community
    • Focus on one concept that makes you stand out
    • Repurpose your top content

It took me five months to reach 1000 followers – slow compared to the top influencers in Finland, perhaps, but not bad for telling bad jokes. The results have kept me inspired and, a year later, I’ve racked up about four million views, with close to 3000 followers.

While these numbers make me feel good, there is another positive takeaway: getting more used to performing on camera. Sure, I’ve been a TV host and YouTuber (remember to subscribe), but having a camera right in your face is a lot more intimate. I’ve even built up the courage to record videos in public.

    TikTok potential for brands

It’s almost 2022, and you’re still contemplating if TikTok is relevant for your brand? To me, the potential is obvious.

    • 1 billion users globally – it’s not just a niche platform for kids
    • Instagram is on the decline – people are tired of how commercial it is and TikTok is more vibrant and less fake
    • TikTok offers a more positive culture, making people more open to new ideas (products)
    • TikTok is perfect for brand to build thought leadership
    • There’s plenty of advertising opportunities already, and social commerce on the way.

If you’re looking for inspirational brands on TikTok, check out Nike, Chipotle, Ryanair, Samsung, or Too Faced.

I hope to see you embrace TikTok and put these tips to good use. Don’t forget to follow me on TikTok.

Speaking of repurposing: I’ve also published my TikToks on YouTube.

  • 10 things ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ teaches about work in a creative agency

10 things ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ teaches about work in a creative agency

For someone who grew up watching the original Star Wars trilogy, that galaxy far far away still remains a treasure trove of inspiration.

While you might not get to handle the PR of a mining startup in the clouds or have a bald android assistant, there’s a lot someone in a creative agency can learn from the Star Wars saga. Here are some great takeaways from Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

    1. Create prototypes and test

Much like Chewbacca and his reassembly of C3PO, a lot of trial and error goes into putting a minimum viable product together – let alone a fully realized concept. Especially creatives and developers need to keep testing their ideas and thinking of alternatives to make them work.

    2. Roll with the punches

Sudden changes in client briefs and project scopes are frustrating, but sometimes all you can do is try and make the best of it. Clients might alter the deal. Pray, they don’t alter it any further.

    3. Get into your audience’s mindset

Thinking outside the box is as much of a prerequisite to a creative in an agency as it is to a bounty hunter chasing after traitors to the Empire. To succeed, you need to understand how your target audience works and thinks. Sometimes this means a deep dive into analytics, other times hiding away in a flood of space garbage.

    4. Trust your instincts

The odds of successfully navigating through an asteroid field aren’t that great. But while you should always be able to support your ideas with concrete data, sometimes going by your gut can give you a leg up on the competition. No amount of stats help if the campaign doesn’t resonate on an emotional level. Search your feelings.

    5. Hiring a freelancer can pay off

Client leads often dislike extra costs, like hiring freelancers to do the work in-house staff should do. However, a fresh pair of eyes can help in taking a project to the next level (see #3 and space garbage). Just prepare to dish out proper compensation.

    6. Take your time

Luke Skywalker can’t handle the pitch.

Anyone working in a creative agency knows how hectic it can get. But getting burnout due to busy schedules, pitches falling through or conflicts within the team just isn’t worth it. Know when to remove yourself from a bad situation and take your time to process feedback. But if you’re planning to jump down a chute 100 stories below you, aim carefully.

    7. Work with the latest innovations

From carbon-freezing to AR, keeping track of trends and the latest innovations is key to maintaining your image as an expert. And whenever you have the chance to include probe droids drones in your campaign, DO IT.

    8. The importance of transparency

Obi-Wan had a great influence on Luke from the start. But it wasn’t until he appeared on Hoth with instructions to find Yoda that Skywalker truly started his Jedi training. While clients or bosses probably don’t know how to appear as mirages, they should strive to be more transparent in order to communicate effectively.

    9. Enjoy any ride

Let’s face it – sometimes a project just stinks. But just like a smelly Tauntaun, even that not-so-favorite client can take you places and even save your business. Avoid slicing their guts out, though.

    10. Know your strengths

Of course, no Star Wars list would be complete without a lesson from Yoda. But there’s more than just “do or do not” to his teachings. Others might judge you without knowing what you’re actually capable of. Remember to focus your energy and use your strengths to pull off incredible feats.

And of course, never forget that no matter if you’re a creative or an HR specialist, luminous beings are we.

    Happy Star Wars Day!

You’ll find plenty of Star Wars tributes on this website, but they are all in Finnish. I’m currently looking for a protocol droid to get everything translated.

Until then, here’s my proposal on the optimal viewing order for the live-action Star Wars films.

  • Kuukauden Digilluusio: miten saavutin 1000 seuraajaa TikTokissa

Kuukauden Digilluusio: miten saavutin 1000 seuraajaa TikTokissa

TikTokin perustoimintaperiaatteet alkoivat hahmottua.

Silloin tällöin julkaistut videot eivät kuitenkaan saaneet sen erikoisemmin vastakaikua, joten asetin itselleni haasteen: katsotaan, mitä tapahtuu, kun julkaisen uuden videon joka päivä kuukauden ajan.

    Miten saada seuraajia TikTokissa?

    Read this article in English

    Tässä vinkkini “TikTok-feimin” kasvattamiseen

    1. Keskity yhteen konseptiin

    2. Julkaise joka päivä

Ensimmäiset videoni tavoittivat parisataa ihmistä, mutta säännöllisyys auttoi varmasti pääsemään yhä useampaan For You -syötteeseen.

OK-mies kommentoi usein videoihini “OK”).

Reagoin myös “heittaajien” herjoihin, huumorilla tietenkin.

    Miten tehdä TikTok-liveä?

1000 seuraajan saamisessa kesti tosiaan useampi kuukausi.

    Miten kohuttu OnlyFans-palvelu toimii?

Koronaeristys innosti monia entistä aktiivisemmiksi aikuisviihteen kuluttajiksi. Erityisen paljon mediassa on puhuttu OnlyFans-sivuston suosion huomattavasta kasvusta.

Vuonna 2016 perustettu OnlyFans yhdistää aikuisviihteen sosiaaliseen mediaan.

    Cardi B (vas) perusti OnlyFans-tilin promotakseen WAP-musiikkivideotaan.

Testissä OnlyFans – miten käytän OnlyFans-palvelua?

Halusin *puhtaasti journalistisin tarkoitusperin* testata, millainen OnlyFans on käytännössä.

OF ehdottaa muutamien sisällöntuottajien tilejä, muttei ymmärrettävästi tarjoa paljasta pintaa sisältävää explore-syötettä.

Hakutoiminto on kömpelö. Se ei tarjoa hakua vastaavia tuloksia (“did you mean…”) eikä välttämättä tunnista edes tarkkaa käyttäjätunnusta.

Tuottaja saattaa kuvata sisältöä hyvin tarkkaan, esimerkiksi “kolmen minuutin video minusta läpinäkyvässä punaisessa topissa.” Hmm, en ole koskaan tavannut edes kokonaan näkyvää Topia, joten pitäisiköhän pistää rahaa likoon?

Yksi palvelun mielekkäimmistä teknisistä ominaisuuksista on automaattiviestien monipuolisuus.

Tuottajat voivat automatisoida tervetulotoivotuksen, jossa he esittelevät tilinsä sisältöä ja käyttöehtoja uusille tilaajille.

OnlyFansin suosio kertoo myös pornomyönteisyyden yleistymisestä (keep telling yourself that, creep).

    Miten optimoida TikTok-kuvaus?

Videon ja kuvatekstin välinen suhde on merkittävästi erilainen TikTokissa muihin some-palveluihin verrattuna.

Instagramissa olemme tottuneet antamaan arkisillekin ilmiöille lyyristä magiaa tai avautumaan aroista aiheista pitkällisillä teksteillä, mutta TikTokissa mennään vahvasti “median ehdoilla”.

Kuvausten merkittävin tekninen rajoite on 150 merkin raja. Tähän pitäisi mahduttaa nippu hashtagejä, joten itse kuvauksesta tulee vääjäämättä one-liner ja puolikas. Turha unelmoida YouTuben yksityiskohtaisesta hakukoneoptimoinnista.

Varsinkin TikTok-tekemisen alkutaipaleella kannattaa mieluummin keskittyä tunnisteisiin, joita on käytetty 10 000 kertaa kuin 10 miljoonaa kertaa, sillä jälkimmäisessä sisältösi todennäköisemmin jää muiden jalkoihin.

Muutama hashtag, jotka voit automaattisesti unohtaa: #foryou, #fyp, #xyzbca. Niiden käyttö ei nosta sisältöäsi automaattisesti muiden käyttäjien For You -suosituksiin.

    TikTok on nykypäivän sketsiviihdettä

Setämiehen on syytä katsoa peiliin kommentoidessaan nuoremman sukupolven some-käyttäytymistä. Viihdeteollisuuden jakelukanavat kehittyvät, mutta tietyt lainalaisuudet toistuvat.

Olenhan itse syyllistynyt “don’t let this flop” -tyyliin, kun 12-13 vuotta sitten arvotin itseäni yrittämällä haalia mahdollisimman monta Facebook-kaveria.

Monen muun tapaan innostuin TikTok-aktiiviksi kevään aikana. Poikkeusolosuhteiden keskellä alusta tarjosi loppumattoman syötteen viihdettä ympäri maailmaa ja tavan toteuttaa itseä kotoa käsin.

Suosio on saanut muut some-jätit kiihdyttämään omien vastineidensa kehitystä. Instagramin elokuussa 2020 julkaistava Reels on kilpailijoista merkittävin.

On olemassa toinenkin ominaispiirre, jonka Instagram voisi kopioida TikTokilta. Eikö olisikin piristävää, jos käyttäjä näkisi ensimmäisenä Explore-syötteen, eikä seuraamiensa käyttäjien sisällöt?
